Jerome Opoku Fires Istanbul Basaksehir to European Football with Late Winner

Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku rose to the occasion on Sunday, May 18, 2025, as his late goal clinched a crucial 1-0 victory for Istanbul Basaksehir over Kasimpasa, securing a spot in European competition next season.

The towering centre-back followed up his missed penalty with a composed rebound finish in the 81st minute, delivering all three points for the Istanbul-based side. The win not only solidified Basaksehir’s fifth-place standing in the Turkish Super Lig but also ensured qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa Conference League.

With two games remaining, Basaksehir now sit four points ahead of sixth-placed Eyuspor, who have just one fixture left. Even a win for Eyuspor on the final day would leave them a point short, confirming Basaksehir’s return to the European stage.

Opoku, who joined the club from Portuguese side Arouca, has been a key figure this season. In 31 league appearances, the England-born Ghanaian has netted three goals and provided two assists, combining defensive solidity with attacking contributions.

His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, with the 25-year-old expected to feature in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London—a competition that could further showcase his talent on an international platform.
