No Return: Atletico Madrid Turn Down Thomas Partey Reunion as Arsenal Exit Looms

In a twist to the summer transfer narrative, Atletico Madrid have rejected the chance to bring back Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, who is set to leave Arsenal at the end of June when his contract expires.

Partey, 31, joined the Gunners from Atletico Madrid in a dramatic €50 million deadline-day move in 2020. While he has had an injury-plagued spell in North London, his influence when fit has been undeniable, racking up 167 appearances, 9 goals, and 7 assists over five seasons.

According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Atletico were recently offered the chance to re-sign their former midfield anchor on a free transfer but declined the opportunity. Instead, Diego Simeone’s side are reportedly prioritizing a €40 million move for Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso.

Interestingly, Partey had been close to renewing with Atletico before his Arsenal move, but talks fell apart over commission disputes. Arsenal capitalized on the situation, swooping in with his release clause to seal the deal.

Despite being injury-hit, Partey was a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s setup last season, with the manager describing the 2024/25 campaign as the midfielder’s most consistent. Nevertheless, with no extension agreed, Arsenal are now eyeing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad as his likely replacement. Other midfielders being scouted include Lucien Agoumé and Christian Nørgaard.

Partey is now exploring options for a new chapter in his career, with interest reportedly emerging from clubs across Europe and the Middle East.
