In a heartwarming moment of national pride, former Black Stars captain André Ayew has paid glowing tribute to the Black Queens for their historic bronze medal triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking during a dinner reception hosted by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in honour of the team, Ayew described their achievement as “more than football” — a true symbol of Ghanaian resilience and inspiration.

“Ghanaians really love football, but what you’ve achieved goes beyond just the sport. You’ve made a name for yourselves,” Ayew told the players, visibly moved by their passion and grit. “I didn’t know some of you before, but now I see how great you all are. This is just the beginning.”

The Black Queens returned to Ghana on Monday, July 28, to a heroine’s welcome after defeating defending champions South Africa in a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout, following a 1-1 stalemate in regular time.

Their third-place finish marks Ghana’s first WAFCON podium appearance since 2016 — a moment that has reignited hope in women’s football across the nation.

Ayew, who famously captained Ghana’s U-20 team to World Cup glory in 2009, said the Queens’ performance has set a new standard and left a legacy that younger generations will look up to.

With the entire country rallying behind them, the message is clear: The Black Queens are back — and this time, they mean business.
