African footballers continued to make their mark across Europe over the weekend, with several stars delivering goals, assists and influential performances for their respective clubs.
From Spain and England to France, African talent was once again at the centre of some of the weekend’s biggest domestic league stories, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Malick Yalcouyé, Adil Bourabaa and Abdallah Sima among the standout performers.
Aubameyang rescues a point for Deportivo
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his remarkable start to the La Liga season by scoring Deportivo La Coruña’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw away to Getafe.
Getafe took the lead through Ramón Terrats, but the experienced Gabonese forward responded to rescue a valuable point for Deportivo.
Aubameyang’s goal extends his excellent scoring run since returning to Spain and further underlines his importance to Deportivo’s attack.
At 37, the Gabon international continues to prove that his goalscoring instincts remain as sharp as ever.
Yalcouyé on target as Brighton thrash Coventry
Ivorian midfielder Malick Yalcouyé was among the goals as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a commanding 5-0 victory over Coventry City.
Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s advantage shortly after half-time, showing composure to race through before calmly finishing past the Coventry goalkeeper.
The 20-year-old’s contribution formed part of a ruthless Brighton display as they added three more goals to complete a five-star victory.
Yalcouyé’s continued involvement in the final third is another encouraging sign of his development in English football.
Bourabaa delivers goal and assist for Le Mans
In France, Adil Bourabaa enjoyed one of the weekend’s most impressive individual performances as Le Mans drew 2-2 with Lens.
The 21-year-old midfielder was directly involved in both of Le Mans’ goals.
Bourabaa first played a key role in the opening goal, providing the assist for Lucas Calodat in the 44th minute before finding the back of the net himself just before half-time.
His goal-and-assist performance gave Le Mans a two-goal cushion going into the break and made him one of the standout players of the encounter.
Sima pulls one back for Lens
On the opposite side, Senegal international Abdallah Sima made his own contribution for Lens.
With Lens trailing 2-0, Sima pulled one back in first-half stoppage time to give his team a lifeline.
Lens eventually completed the comeback after Franjo Ivanović equalised early in the second half, earning a 2-2 draw.
Sima’s goal was his contribution to a dramatic comeback after Le Mans had looked firmly in control.
African talent continues to shine
The weekend once again demonstrated the growing influence of African footballers across Europe’s domestic leagues.
Aubameyang provided experience and a crucial equaliser in Spain, Yalcouyé continued his development with another goal in England, while Bourabaa produced arguably the most complete individual performance of the weekend with a goal and an assist.
Sima, meanwhile, played his part in Lens’ comeback with an important goal before the interval.
With the season gathering momentum, African players are already making significant contributions for clubs across Europe. And if this weekend was anything to go by, there will be plenty more African stars ready to take centre stage in the weeks ahead.
