Black Princesses’ World Cup dream ends after 4-0  defeat to France

Ghana’s Black Princesses have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 4–0 defeat to France in their final Group C match at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland on Saturday, September 12TH 2026.

The defeat brought Ghana’s campaign to an end at the group stage, despite the team recovering from an opening-day loss to Ecuador with a 3–1 victory over South Korea in their second fixture.

The Black Princesses entered their final group game knowing that they needed a positive result against France to keep their qualification hopes alive. However, Ghana were unable to overcome the French side, who secured a convincing victory to bring the Black Princesses’ tournament journey to a close.

Ghana began the competition with a difficult 3–0 defeat to Ecuador. Ecuador scored twice in the first half before adding a third after the break, with Ghana also losing goalkeeper Najat Abdul Salam to injury during the match.

The team responded strongly in their second match, defeating South Korea 3–1 to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Captain Sarah Nyarko opened the scoring with a long-range effort before Ivy Osei Owusu doubled Ghana’s advantage. Substitute Ruth Amponsah added a third in the 84th minute, while South Korea scored a consolation goal in added time.

That victory gave Ghana momentum heading into the decisive meeting with France, but the Black Princesses ultimately fell short in their final group assignment.

The result means Ghana finish their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign without advancing to the knockout stage for the 8th consecutive time.

For head coach Charles Sampson and his young squad, the tournament provided valuable experience at the highest level of women’s youth football.

The team will now turn its attention to regrouping and building on the lessons from its campaign in Poland. The Black Princesses remain one of Africa’s most established youth women’s national teams, and the focus will now be on developing the next generation of players and preparing for future international competitions.
