The Ghana Military Academy (GMA) recently paid homage to the legendary boxer Azumah Nelson, honoring his remarkable achievements and contributions to the sport of boxing in Ghana.
The ceremony also celebrated Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Benard Quartey during an inter-company novices boxing competition organized for cadets of Regular Career Course (RCC) 63 at Whistler Barracks, Teshie. The competition took place from Monday, April 29, to Friday, May 3, 2024.
Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Solomon Tei-Mensah Osabutey (Rtd) expressed appreciation as the Guest of Honour at the event, recognizing the significance of novices boxing in the training of officer cadets worldwide.
He highlighted the importance of novices boxing in imparting unarmed combat skills, nurturing a fighting spirit, and fostering self-confidence, mental resilience, and toughness among potential officers.
Brig Gen Osabutey (Rtd) emphasized that the boxing competition aimed not to groom cadets into professional boxers or encourage aggression but rather to instill discipline, self-defense capabilities, and the ethos of protecting civilians.
He applauded the female cadets for their determination, bravery, and boxing prowess, underscoring the commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces to providing equal opportunities for women to demonstrate their capabilities.
The overall best company title was secured by Abyssinia Company with 81 points, followed by Duala Company with 79 points and Chiringa Company with 73 points. Officer Cadet Solomon Atampa received the Best Boxer award, Naval Cadet Wendey Atiayao Mawunyor was recognized as the Best Female Boxer, and Flight Cadet Emmanuel Nunoo was honored with the Gallant Loser award.
Dignitaries in attendance included Commodore Prosper Mensah Kwami Modey, Deputy Commandant Training and Doctrines Command, Commodore Bright Emmanuel Kojo Atiayao, Chief Staff Officer at the Naval Headquarters, and other senior officers.

Following two days of electrifying competition at the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 (held on May 4-5, 2024), a total of 70 teams have earned qualification for relay events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In Nassau, fourteen teams in each of the five disciplines – the women’s and men’s 4x100m and 4x400m, along with the mixed 4x400m – have automatically secured places for Paris. The initial 40 qualifying teams were announced on Saturday, with the final 30 confirmed on Sunday after a second Olympic qualifying round for teams that missed out on the first day.
Teams that secured qualification on Saturday also ensured their participation in the respective World Relays finals on Sunday. These finals provided teams with opportunities to compete for prize money and secure Olympic lane seeding positions.

Emmanuel Mensah, a promising young talent, showcased his prowess by scoring twice on Saturday, securing a 2-2 draw for CSM Sighetu Marmatiei against CSM Satu Mare.
The former Young Apostles player has now amassed an impressive total of 13 goals in the Romanian third-tier league.
Mensah capitalized on a goalkeeping error to open the scoring, and his second goal was a remarkable strike from close range.
This crucial performance propelled CSM Sighetu Marmatiei to second place in the league standings with three matches remaining in the season.

Barring any transfers, Black Stars midfielder Mohammed Kudus is poised to experience a change in leadership at West Ham United next season, with Julen Lopetegui confirmed as the club’s new manager.
The announcement of Lopetegui’s appointment comes today, marking the Spanish manager’s return to the English Premier League after his previous tenure with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Lopetegui is set to succeed David Moyes as the head figure on the sidelines at The London Stadium starting from the 2024-2025 season.
Despite David Moyes guiding West Ham to success in the UEFA Europa Conference League and consistently securing knockout stage finishes in European competitions over three consecutive seasons, he has faced significant criticism regarding the team’s overall performance.
Interestingly, West Ham’s most recent victory in all competitions was a 2-1 triumph over Wolves at the Molineux Stadium on April 6. Coincidentally, Lopetegui, who previously managed Wolves, resigned from his position reportedly due to the club’s financial circumstances, despite leading them to a 13th-place finish.
Lopetegui boasts a notable track record, having won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 after his dismissal as Spain’s head coach just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup for reaching an agreement with Real Madrid.
During his debut season at West Ham, Mohammed Kudus has been a standout performer for The Hammers, tallying seven goals and providing five assists in 31 league appearances.
As of the latest update, Kudus leads all players in completed dribbles across Europe’s top five leagues, drawing attention from several clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, due to his impressive performances.
