Ghana’s Black Princesses have revived their campaign from their opening day defeat to Ecuador with a commanding 3–1 victory over Korea Republic in their second Group C match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The win, secured on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the Arena Sosnowiec, gives Ghana three crucial points and keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. The Black Princesses had entered the match under pressure after suffering a 3–0 defeat to Ecuador in their opening game.
Captain Sarah Nyarko opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a long-range strike before Ivy Osei Owusu doubled Ghana’s advantage just three minutes later. Ruth Amponsah then added a third in the 84th minute to put the result beyond Korea Republic’s reach. Korea Republic scored a late consolation goal in stoppage time, but Ghana held on to secure a valuable 3–1 victory.
The result represents a strong response from Charles Sampson’s side, who were determined to recover from the disappointment against Ecuador. Ahead of the encounter, Sampson expressed confidence in his players’ ability to respond and redeem themselves after the opening defeat.
Ghana made two changes to the starting lineup for the encounter, with Precious Akanguwie starting in goal while Salma Naazo was handed her first start of the tournament. Captain Sarah Nyarko retained her place in the team, with Ivy Osei Owusu also featuring from the start.
The victory is particularly significant for the Black Princesses, who are making their eighth consecutive appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Ghana are still searching for their first progression beyond the group stage, having exited at this stage in each of their previous appearances. The Black Princesses were drawn in Group C alongside Ecuador, Korea Republic and France. After two matches, Ghana now have three points and will need another strong performance in their final group fixture to keep their knockout stage ambitions alive.
