The CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round delivered another day of continental drama on Sunday, September 13, as clubs across Africa battled for places in the second preliminary round.
There were convincing victories, aggregate comebacks and closely fought ties, with Singida Black Stars, CS Sfaxien, Red Arrows and Kabuscorp among the sides to secure progression.
Singida Black Stars cruise through
Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars produced one of Sunday’s strongest performances, defeating Al-Ghazala of South Sudan 3-0.
Singida had already taken a commanding advantage into the second leg after winning the first meeting 7-1 away from home.
The second victory completed a dominant 10-1 aggregate triumph, underlining their superiority across the two legs.
Red Arrows complete the job
Zambian side Red Arrows also secured their place in the next round after beating Madagascar’s Inate Rouge 2-0.
Both goals came from A. Mumba, who struck in the 27th and 58th minutes.
Having won the first leg 2-0, Red Arrows completed a convincing 4-0 aggregate victory.
CS Sfaxien overturn first-leg deficit
One of Sunday’s more notable comebacks came from Tunisian giants CS Sfaxien.
After losing the first leg 1-0 to Nigeria’s Shooting Stars, Sfaxien responded with a 2-0 home victory.
Goals from Belwafi in the 27th minute and Habchia in the 68th minute turned the tie around, sending the Tunisian side through 2-1 on aggregate.
Kabuscorp maintain control
Angolan club Kabuscorp de Palanca also progressed after defeating Namibia’s UNAM 2-0 in the second leg.
The result completed a 4-0 aggregate victory, following their 2-0 success in the first meeting.
Kabuscorp’s two-leg performance was one of the more comfortable qualifications of the weekend.
Durban City edge Rukinzo
South Africa’s Durban City advanced after a 2-1 victory over Burundi’s Rukinzo.
Durban City had entered the second leg with a narrow 1-0 advantage and eventually completed a 3-1 aggregate victory.
The South African side showed enough resilience away from home to protect their advantage and move into the next stage.
Other Sunday results
Elsewhere, DC Virunga defeated Bazar Brothers 1-0, while Nations FC drew 1-1 with FC Diarra.
ASKO de Kara defeated AS ZAM 1-0, while CO Korhogo also won 2-0 against AS PSI.
In another decisive result, UDIB defeated El Kanemi Warriors 1-0, while the day’s action also featured the 2-0 victory of CS Sfaxien over Shooting Stars.
The road continues
Sunday’s results brought another round of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary stage closer to completion, with the successful clubs now looking ahead to the next challenge.
For Singida Black Stars and Red Arrows, the emphatic aggregate victories provide plenty of confidence, while CS Sfaxien’s comeback demonstrated the importance of home advantage and experience in continental competition. With the second preliminary round approaching, the battle for a place in the group stage is beginning to take shape.
