Kenyans rule Accra as Korio, Ndambuki triumph at KGL millennium marathon

Kenyan athletes Alex Korio and Lucy Ndambuki stole the show at the 2026 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon, winning the men’s and women’s elite 21km races in Accra on Saturday.

The race, held at Independence Square, attracted thousands of runners from Ghana and beyond, with athletes competing across various categories.

Korio emerged as the men’s elite champion, while Ndambuki produced a standout performance in the women’s race, setting a new course record in the process.

The impressive performances underlined the dominance of Kenyan distance runners and added another memorable chapter to the annual Millennium Marathon.

Beyond the competition, this year’s event carried a strong focus on mental health through the KGL Foundation’s Mental Health Index (MHI), a digital-led initiative designed to raise awareness and encourage conversations around mental wellbeing in Ghana.

The initiative builds on the Millennium Marathon’s Corporate Wellness Forum held earlier this year, which introduced a Health & Fitness Index designed to assess corporate organisations across physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing and community engagement.

Speaking after the event, one of the organisers praised the collaboration between the Millennium Marathon team and the KGL Foundation, highlighting the work that went into making the event a success.

So much has gone on behind the scenes from the Millennium Marathon side and from the KGL side and I love how we have been able to come together to make this a success. I’m just super proud of my team and super proud of everyone who has run today,” he said.

The KGL Foundation has also continued to invest in social interventions over the past five years. Its initiatives include the construction of the KGL-EVE Wellness Centre, a mental health facility north of Accra, renovation works at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, the KGL U-17 Championship and the donation of incubators to health facilities across the country. With sport, fitness and mental wellbeing at the heart of this year’s marathon, the event went beyond the race itself, using athletics as a platform to promote healthier communities and greater awareness of mental health in Ghana.
